Courts urged to offer female judges to Indigenous victims of violent crimes

Prosecutors are being urged to ask for female judges to hear cases involving Indigenous women who are victims of violent crime.

In a consultation paper presented to the Senate inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children, the office of the New South Wales director of public prosecutions has pointed to a 2021 ruling in the state’s court of appeal that courts have the power, in some circumstances, to direct that cases be heard by a judicial officer of a certain sex.
