A Japanese woman who has spent the last six years unable to leave Australia while she was engaged in a drawn-out custody battle with her ex-husband, whom she alleges violently abused her, is facing deportation now that she has been granted full custody of the child.

Late last year Fumiko* got the news she had been waiting for: final orders from the family court that granted her full custody of her 10-year-old son, Ataro*.
